Meet your local area Surveyor: Somerset

Moving our way up through Devon towards Somerset, we would like to introduce to you Alistair Clark who covers the Somerset and Dorset region.

Find out more about Alistair’s typical working day, his work background and his project experience below.

Tell us about your work background

“My career background is in Warranty and Building Control inspections. My most recent posts before joining Cook Brown Building Control was for Local Authority Building Control in Buckinghamshire and in Somerset. I have been working for Cook Brown for the past 3 years, covering the West Country Somerset and Dorset region.”

Take us through your typical work day as a Building Control Surveyor in Somerset and Dorset

“A typical working day starts with a couple of hours desk work at home, responding to email questions on specific works and general enquiries, providing quotes for prospective projects, plan checking my new projects and revisions to existing jobs. I then plan my site visits for the day, liaising with colleagues to ensure efficient travel time and routes and discuss any technical issues. I often finish my day at the team office in Bridgwater where I may update my site notes, deal with admin tasks and discuss any matters arising with other team members.”

Describe what a successful partnership between yourself and your client looks like

“My clients may be Homeowners, Architects or Developers. In all cases a successful partnership requires a friendly professional dialogue where information is provided, questions are answered, and issues are resolved promptly and effectively.”

Tell us about the types of projects you have worked on in your area

“The mainly rural nature of my area means that barn conversions and domestic extensions/loft conversions as well as new build sites are common. Material change of use from large homes to apartments or retirement homes are also projects I often see. I have also worked on commercial schemes such as office fit-outs, as well as additions to and the modernisation of local schools.”

Tell us about you, what do you get up to outside of work?

“Outside of work I assist with training and match day duties for a local junior football team. I also have an interest in amateur photography, when I get the time. Recently a friend has taken over a local pub and introduced me to skittles and there is talk of a league team.”
