Introducing our Specialist Projects Team

 

Our Specialist Projects Team provide Building Regulations and Inspection support to duty-holders (Investors, Developers, Constructors, Fire Engineers, Project Managers, Architects and Landlords), that satisfy the new Building Safety Regulatory changes.

The team have many years’ experience providing Building Control Approved Inspector Plan Checking and Site Inspection services across England and Wales, typically through RIBA Stages 4-5 on innovative and complex schemes such as;
• MOD, Crown, and Government buildings
• Mixed use developments
• High rise towers
• Innovative modern construction and off-site construction
• Multiple basement levels
• Museums and Historical buildings
• Hospitals
• Schools

They work closely with the design and construction team including Fire Engineers and local Fire Authorities to help ensure risk reduction and compliant fire safety designs.

Dave Allen , Director

Tell us about your work background.
“I`m passionate about helping deliver compliant buildings and working closely on fantastic schemes across the country.

I have worked in private and public sector building control for 38 years and have dealt with museums, listed buildings, complex mixed developments, cladding replacement and student accommodation.

We at the Special Projects Team at Cook Brown work proactively with design and construction teams and understand the complex technical queries and programme critical timescales that require our complete buy-in.”

 

Andrew Bullen, Associate Director

Tell us about your work background.
“I hold a degree in Building Surveying from Sheffield Hallam University and subsequently qualified as a Chartered Building Engineer. I’m currently a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Association of Building Engineers and an Associate Member of the Institution of Fire Engineers.

I have over 30 years of construction industry experience, the last twenty-two working for both public and more recently, private sector Building Control bodies. Prior to joining the private sector, I was the Principal Building Control Surveyor for Barnsley Council Metropolitan Borough Council – a position I held for nearly nine years.

However, my long and varied surveying career started as a Building Surveyor producing design schemes for a range of projects, undertaking building surveys and producing planned and preventative maintenance programmes for private surveying practices.

I have substantial experience as lead Building Control Surveyor on a diverse portfolio of new build and refurbishment projects across the commercial and residential sectors of the industry, delivering practical, common sense and solution-based approach to assist clients in achieving compliance.”

Tell us about your work background.
“I completed a BSc Hons Building Surveying Degree at Liverpool John Moores University around 10 years ago and have been working in the Building Control industry as an Approved Inspector ever since.

For 5 years I worked for a company specialising in commercial projects across all market sectors. My experience includes renovation projects involving historical and listed buildings, projects involving a material change of use and working within sectors such as industrial, education, storage and distribution, residential/other residential and student accommodation.

As part of the Specialist Projects team, we cover small, medium and large projects that have a technical element such as, being a medium or major project or minor works in a complex building, complex development or works to a historic or listed building. Our aim is to be involved at an early stage and provide a proactive service to guide our clients on the best ways to ensure building regulation compliance on a project.”

Tell us about your work background.
“I have 20 years experience working within the Building Control sector and I am currently a Chartered Member of the Chartered Association of Building Engineers. I have extensive knowledge, experience and understanding of the industry, the Building Regulations and relevant associated legislation.

During this time, I have enjoyed periods of employment in both the Private and Public Building Control sectors. Such experience has provided me with an opportunity to work on a wide variety of projects that range in complexity, while appreciating the common need to provide a cost effective, customer focused service.”

 

Lee Blendell, Building Control Surveyor

Tell us about your work background.
“I started my career in construction in 1990 as an apprentice joiner with my Local Authority. I have since progressed my career with time as a self-employed joiner, site manager for a local developer, contracts manager, and a project manager working on a number of different projects in different sectors. In 2018 I worked as a risk management surveyor and have since moved to gain experience in Building Control on different projects.”

Tell us about your work background.
“I have over 6 years experience in Building Control, for the first 4 years I was working for an Approved Inspector on predominantly domestic projects while for the last 2 years I have been working for Cook Brown Building Control on predominantly commercial projects.

My role every day is to check that building work is being carried out in accordance with the building regulations which involves undertaking site inspections, attending site meetings, plan checking and project managing a variety of commercial and domestic projects.”
