The Water Tower, Bristol

We were appointed by Cameron Building Services to provide Registered Building Control Approver services for the conversion of the former Frenchay Water Tower into four high quality duplex apartments. Originally constructed in the 1930s, the iconic structure formed part of the historic Frenchay Hospital site and remains the last original building from the former hospital development, giving the project significant historical and architectural importance within the wider regeneration of the area.

Situated within a newly developed residential neighbourhood in North East Bristol, the project involved the sensitive refurbishment and adaptation of the existing water tower structure to create modern residential accommodation while retaining the character and appearance of the landmark building. The scheme presented a number of technical and structural considerations due to the age, shape and original function of the building, requiring close collaboration between the design team, contractor and project stakeholders throughout the construction process.

Our role included carrying out detailed plan assessments and undertaking regular site inspections during the works to monitor compliance with the Building Regulations. The conversion incorporated extensive internal alterations, structural modifications and the installation of new residential facilities and services, all carefully integrated within the existing structure.

The completed development has successfully transformed a well recognised historic structure into a distinctive residential scheme, preserving an important part of the site’s heritage while delivering four unique contemporary homes within the Bristol area.
