Richard Ferris

Principal Building Control Surveyor, BSc (Hons), BA, MCABE

My work background:

My Building Control career began in 2004 at Gloucester City Council as a Trainee where I then became a fully Qualified Surveyor. During my time at a Local Authority, I dealt with a wide variety of Building Control Applications as well as undertaking DDA Audits, Contravention Applications, Dangerous Structures, Licensing and dealing with Safety aspects at Sports Grounds.

I then left in 2013 to work at Butler & Young Building Control as a Project Manager working on all types of Commercial projects including for Tesco, Morrisons, and New Look stores.
In May 2015 I joined Cook Brown Building Control as a Principal Building Control Surveyor.

About my role:

I manage a team of Surveyors including monitoring performance, reviewing work, and training and mentoring unqualified members of staff. I undertake regular reviews and help both in the office and on site to resolve and issues.

I undertake Plan Checks and Site Inspections for a wide variety of both Domestic and Commercial projects. This includes Domestic Extensions, New Dwellings, Loft Conversion etc and Commercial projects from Flats Conversions, Retail, Office Fit Outs to New Buildings.
In addition, the appointment also involves supporting the managers for this area in developing and expanding the business through marketing and personnel development.
I also have the responsibility of developing procedures and improving the methods of working for the office as well as supporting and guiding new trainees.

About me:

I like most sports – particularly watching them, I attempt to play golf (but I am still yet to understand it) and doing exercise (going for a run, on a bike etc). I also have a love for all things science fiction and space related. Most of my life revolves around my two little girls and Paw Patrol now!
