Client: St Pancras Hospital
Architect: Quattro Design Architects
Overview
Cook Brown Building Control provided building control services for the Evergreen Mental Health Ward project at St Pancras Hospital. The project was led by Quattro Design Architects – with a team specialising in healthcare architecture. This project transformed existing 4-person bed bay wards and supporting rooms into mental health consulting rooms.
Approach
The refurbishment aimed to create a user-friendly, vibrant environment that promotes open conversations about mental health. This involved a comprehensive redesign to add user and clinical support rooms within the ward’s existing footprint. Key considerations included anti-ligature requirements, careful material selection, and a layout that met all regulatory standards while maintaining a welcoming atmosphere.
The waiting areas were opened up to create a light, welcoming environment, with newly designed staff offices and reception areas that enhance user navigation and relaxation. Splitting the large bed bay wards into smaller consulting rooms resulted in a 133% increase in mental healthcare spaces, from 6 to 14 rooms. Additionally, new staff facilities, including a kitchenette and toilets, were added to improve the working environment.
Challenges
Working within an existing building presented challenges, particularly in meeting room size and capacity requirements while adhering to budget constraints. Despite these hurdles, Quattro’s design met all regulatory standards and achieved the desired balance between functionality and aesthetics.
Outcome
The Evergreen Mental Health Ward at St Pancras Hospital now features state-of-the-art consulting rooms and support facilities that cater to mental health patients. The refurbished ward offers a fresh and engaging environment, supporting the hospital’s mission to provide top-quality mental health care.
Cook Brown Building Control’s involvement ensured that the Evergreen Ward project adhered to all necessary building control standards. The collaboration with Quattro Design Architects underscores a commitment to creating safe, sustainable, and user-friendly healthcare environments.
