A familiar heritage site in the Stokes Croft area of Bristol City Centre which is listed on Heritage England’s ‘At Risk’ register will soon be put back to working use after thirty-five years of laying empty.
The grade II listed Victorian building, the Carriageworks, and the adjoining derelict former office building, Westmoreland House, are well underway in their transformation into a new mixed-use development that will bring a mix of open market and affordable housing with modern amenities and a new market area to the local community.
The development consists of four blocks that will form 116 residential units, and 14 ground floor commercial units around a central market area. Due to the historical value of the Carriageworks, careful thought has been put in to retaining the most notable and beautiful element of the building, the front façade. The developers have cleverly left the impressive and memorable bath stone dressed arches still standing with the support of a complex scaffolding retention system. These arches will be carefully restored to their former glory to form an impressive main entrance to the development.
Following our appointment to oversee the works at the former Empire Sports Club, PG Construction Management (Carriageworks) Ltd are pleased to work with us again on this new project. To date we have completed a Building Regulations Tracker for each of the four blocks and undertaken a number of site inspection at the necessary stages since work began on site.
“We love to be involved in projects like these; that look to bring life back to derelict areas, whilst having a positive impact on the local community. Works are progressing well on site and I look forward to seeing the fully functioning development bringing new opportunities to Stokes Croft.”
