Work is due to begin on a two-year scheme, named ‘The Rising’, to restore and preserve historic buildings at Raby Castle Park and Gardens and enhance the current visitor experience.
Raby Castle has stood as a landmark within County Durham for 700 years and the dynamic scheme, will re-purpose heritage buildings as well as introduce new structures to provide stylish events and exhibition spaces, retail and dining experiences and a visitor information hub. As well as these building upgrades, newly designed walled gardens and soft landscaping will reposition Raby Castle Park and Gardens as a historical and cultural asset for visitors and local communities.
The first phase of The Rising sees the construction of a bespoke children’s adventure playground that aims to be open by Easter 2022 but also incorporates a refreshment kiosk and stargazing deck. Later works will incorporate a new, purpose-built visitor information building, The Round House, which will act as a point of welcome and orientation.
The Grade 2* listed Coach House & Stables will also be restored and repurposed to provide elegant retail and interpretation spaces and after being redundant for decades, the historic Vine House will be re-purposed as the high-quality Vinery Café overlooking the former High Garden.
Notably the Dutch Barn and Riding School will similarly be renovated along with extensive works to the Walled Garden which will provide a magical outdoor space where visitors can move through exquisite planting or attend performances and events.
Advising on this project for Cook Brown Building Control is Rob Cuthbertson from our Northern Specialist Projects and Consultancy Services team. Rob has previously worked on several Grade I/Grade II*Grade II buildings and this project adds another notable heritage asset to the existing company’s project portfolio.
“It is great to working on such a notable scheme. There is a fantastic design team working on the project, some I have worked with before and some for the first time but all with extensive heritage experience and I have no doubt that the project will turn out to be fantastic. If I and the Specialist projects team can play a small part in creating that, I’ll be more than happy”.
